Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala with the unending stretch of paddy fields, small streams and canals with lush green coconut palms. East of Alappuzha town is the Netherlands of Kerala known as Kuttanad, because farming is done one to two metres below sea level by means of bunds and pumping out of water up to sea level. Sometimes, the protective walls of the rice fields leak or break, causing flooding and damage to the crops. During rainy season, the rush of floodwater may cause damage to the bunds.


Pathiramanal, meaning the Sands of Midnight, is a green little island in Vembanad Lake, on the border of Kottayam-Alleppey Districts in Kerala. It will take about 40 minutes from Kumarakom to arrive at Pathiramanal. The island is about 5 kilometers away, and from Kumarakom.

The island is known as bird-watcher's paradise.

Vembanad Lake

Vembanad Lake, the largest backwater in Kerala, is habitat for many marine and freshwater fish species and it teems with Karimeen (Pearl spot), shrimp (chemmeen in the local language) and prawns. The bird sanctuary extends over 14 acres and is a major tourist attraction.
